The Godfather was the highest-grossing film of 1972, and for many years it was the highest-grossing film ever made. It won Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 45th Academy Awards, won Marlon Brando the Best Actor award, and resulted in seven other Oscar nominations. A landmark of the gangster film genre and regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, The Godfather is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema by the American Film Institute (second only to Citizen Kane). The film's sequels The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III are also considered some the greatest films ever made.
